We may have a few weeks left to wait before the Premier League starts in England, but up in Scotland, the festivities will be getting underway this weekend as the nation attempts to build off of their side s appearance at Euro 2020. The opening game will see Rangers, who comprehensively won the championship last season, beginning the defence of their crown as they square off against a Livingston team that hopes to make some real waves in the next few years.
Rangers
Many eyebrows were raised when Steven Gerrard was first appointed manager of Rangers Football Club but in the present day, we re pretty sure most folks would admit that it s actually gone quite swimmingly. They ve reclaimed their spot at the top of Scottish football, they re beginning to find their feet on the European stage, and Gerrard has built a squad capable of giving just about anyone a tough game.
Team News
Barker and Roofe are both set to miss out here as a result of close contact with a positive COVID-19 case. Ofoborh s career is on hold as a result of a heart condition being diagnosed, with the only primary absence in terms of injuries being Ryan Jack.
Livingston
The fact that this Livingston side was able to finish in the top six and get through to the championship round is as clear of an indication as any that they mean business. They ve got a fruitful young squad, they re impressive to watch on the ball and they never really seem to panic under pressure. It s going to take a big effort for them to get something at Ibrox but if anyone is going to cause Rangers problems on the opening day, it ll be them.
Team News
Livingston don t have to concern themselves with any injuries or suspensions as they prepare to put their best starting XI forward for the opener. Obileye is set to start at the back with Montano and Shinnie hoping to impress as they have done since arriving.
Factors to Consider
Rangers won the title last season whereas Livingston finished 6th.
Rangers have won four and drawn two of their last six games.
Livingston have won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six games.
Rangers have scored 16 goals and conceded five in their last six games.
Livingston have scored seven goals and conceded six in their last six games.
Conclusion
Rangers are starting to look like a team that could not only do well domestically, but could also transfer their success into European competition which is why we re feeling pretty confident about their chances in the opening game of the season. We do think Livingston are going to sit back and try to hit Rangers with a nice set piece, but ultimately, we re backing the hosts to edge out a nice 1-0 win.
